I've read another book by Gabrielle Zevin (not Elsewhere folks, but the Teenage Amnesiac one lol) so I was curious about this one. Plus Illegal Chocolate and MOBSTERS? Like TOTALLY. :DDD
However there's a few thing -- well ONE big thing mainly.
It was the whole religious aspect. It was too much for me personally. Every time it was brought up I just cringed mentally. No offense. But it was like, "Oh no, I can't do that because of my religion, sorry." I can understand beliefs and morals, but it felt more like a constant EXCUSE throughout the book... I mean....there's a CERTAIN part where
And I thought the pacing, despite a bit slow, was good.
The character development was well driven and I only wished there was more development with the others a bit more -- but this is written in 1st POV so I can forgive. I still find 1st POV to be VERY limiting at times. But if done well, everyone is happy. I know because I've written in 1st POV (which is VERY rare, I only do it if the protagonist in question has a VERY distinct voice and that practically DEMANDS to be written this way).
All in all, this was well done.
There's some areas that Zevin could improve on and alter, but this was pretty good.
Until next time. :D
